Venezuela Lonely PlanetSolo Travel Safety Tips rights in Latin America-For Women
A common issue seen in many travel forums is "how is it safe to travel to X (one on the Latin American countries) as a solo traveler wife?" It is quite understandable why traveling alone for Latin America may seem a daunting prospect, especially if you're a woman. However, women who have been in this region of the world know it is not necessary to display this type of question. All the countries of Central and South America are generally safe to visit a solo female traveler. There are, however, some areas are at risk and should be avoided.

Many large cities in Latin America have areas that are not particularly desirable and you should stick to the tourist parts of modern cities, if you visit them. This includes all major cities in Central America (ie Belize City, Guatemala City, Managua, Mexico City, Panama City, San Jose, San Salvador and Tegucigalpa). There are also certain parts of cities in South America that should be avoided, such as Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Sao Paulo in Brazil, and Caracas in Venezuela. As for large cities in Central America, the staff in tourist areas and you'll be fine. You must also take care when visiting specific areas of certain countries like Colombia and Venezuela. For example, it is not a good idea to hang around the border areas of Colombia, or travel to mask off the beaten path destinations. Although Colombia and Venezuela had bad press that they are both relatively safe place to visit if you stick to tourist destinations mentioned in travel guides of good reputation. If somewhere mentioned in a guide of good reputation, it is almost certainly safe to visit.

This leads to an important point in the discussion. It is very easy to get paranoid about visiting certain countries and cities, but this is totally unjustified. Remember, that certain parts of these countries and cities that are best avoided, as were parts of cities in Europe or North America are to be avoided. In fact, travel around most of Latin America is much safer and more pleasant than traveling in many parts of Europe or North America. Moreover, as Susan Griffith rightly emphasizes in "Traveling solo as a woman in Asia" there is a mythology about the pernicious female lone traveler, whether as a hitchhiker in Great Britain or a traveler in South Asia. Many people instantly exaggerate the dangers and stress the vulnerability of a single woman. Often, this doom-ridden response is just an excuse for their own timidity of the mind. "Do not be paranoid Latin American countries are no more dangerous than many other countries in this world and in reality you're more likely to encounter problems in some European countries or North American countries.

Returning to the classic issue seen on Travel forums (ie how is it safe to travel to X as a single female traveler) should indicate the responsibilities and capabilities of the individual. The security is intrinsically linked to knowledge and experience. Whenever planning a trip to Latin America or elsewhere in the world, it is absolutely essential that you do your research. Try to find as much information as possible about the country or countries you wish to visit. Travel guides such as those produced by Lonely Planet and Footprint will help you decide which places you want to visit and those that you could or should avoid. The Internet is also an invaluable source of information and there are many sites dedicated to travel concerns of individual women. It is often described as "Streetwise," if the definition has been applied to travel rather than the urban environment, some travelers may easily be labeled as "TravelWise" (ie having consciousness cunning, experience and ingenuity to survive a difficult task, often dangerousness.
