How does Google Earth photos of the space of 40 years? Google Earth 5.0, you can see the areas in the 40s but how did they get these pictures if the first satellite was launched in 1957 and the first satellite to take pictures of the earth, space was in 1959.
Many historic photographs are in fact aerial photos and not satellite images. You are correct in your question how they could have been satellite images before satellites took pictures of the space.
Google Earth 5.0 includes historical aerial photos and satellite images you see are likely 40 years of aerial photographs only.
Good question, but I was not aware of the new Google Earth 5.0 that has "historic Imagery" I'll check it out!
Aerial photography has been around for a long time since someone figured out how to get a camera in an airplane. These images are aerial reconnaissance, which is well established in the 1940s as it was widely used in the Second World War.
