NASA technology used in electronic commerce? NASA was established over 50 years and has been a world leader in studies of our planet. In October 2005 NASA decided to split their series of stunning images Blue Marble. "The satellite photos were divided into 12 months and gave a detailed overview of an entire year in the life of our planet.
Each image took 10 gigabytes of hard disk space. To be able to understand what really is 10 gigabytes, you may think that each image is composed of 5000 pictures taken with a typical digital camera.
Two years later, they are probably even larger zoomable images ever seen on the Internet. Thank you to zoom technology advanced, it is possible for NASA to manage and explore our land with images using any Internet connection.
In recent years it has become possible to buy expensive products on the Internet. You can buy everything from clothes, cars with expensive furniture. Unfortunately you still have to take a decision for the product based on one or a few images - often of poor quality.
Several studies have shown that the biggest obstacle in electronic commerce is the lack of modern images of quality products - more specifically the lack of image detail or resolution enough. Customers can not "experience and feel" products in the same way they have been holding them.
The explanation is that high quality images take a lot of disk space and increase download time. It is inappropriate to allow Internet users to wait several seconds for a high quality image every time the user visits a product.
Another obstacle is the increasing use of mobile devices such as PDAs and mobile phones. It is too hard to make a decision for a product on a display 240 x 320 pixels on a mobile phone, if the product image is 1680 x 1050 pixels.
But how can it still be possible to zoom large images such as satellite images from NASA 10Gb by using an Internet connection while webmasters have trouble controlling the size of their images for the web?
By combining and re-scaling of existing technologies for other purposes and goals, it became possible to see and feel about tiny details of every e-commerce products in the same way that you can study every detail of even large satellite images.
E-Consultant Sonja Jacobsen explains the controversial combination of NASA technology and web technology exists "as a way to move forward in a competitive market" and "almost all e-shops will be able to present their products with zoomable images within 2-3 years with similar technologies.
