Lonely Planet Caribbean

Lonely Planet CaribbeanCrew of a boat to Rio Dulce?

Hello everyone,

I am a young woman from Alaska Local Roaming through Central America, Nicaragua and currently considering north to visit Guatemala for some time. I've been down here in the Centro a few months and so far my trip has been very good, but I'm not sure what I want to do next.

So here is my question: Lonely Planet Central America on a shoestring guide, in the "work" section of Guatemala, he said that "Rio Dulce is a place to visit if you are looking for crew a boat around the Caribbean and northern states. "
Can we really do? Or does anyone know anything about a boat crew from Rio Dulce to the States?
This sounds like it would be a great opportunity to spend quality time working on the Caribbean seas and a fun way to return to the States. Is there a lot of boats in Rio Dulce looking for members of the crew? And would they need people who are very experienced working on boats?? I do not have much experience working boat, but I am a quick learner and strong (ex-skier).

I would appreciate your feedback, ideas, or pieces of advice you might offer. Thank you!

The few boats on the Rio Dulce rarely go anywhere. If you want to go to the U.S., your best is better to wait until spring, and try to get the island of Antigua in the Caribbean, just before the race week in April.

Thank you for the replies people. I heard back from some people who decided to sail from Rio Dulce to the States this spring, and I'm currently planning on meeting with someone and their boats in a few weeks! Very exciting!
(And don `t worry, I can not swim!) Report Abuse

Im sure you need a great experience to work on boats, you must first know how to swim.
What I know for sure is that you'll love the Rio Dulce!
Good luck! Enjoy!
